Surrender

for the square that held me

for the square that held me

Let the line break.
Let the vessel crack.
Let the leaf unfold its breath
against the grid.
What I surrender
I do not lose.
What I quiet
becomes
a deeper sound.
before the vessel opens

before the vessel opens

I shaped myself
to fit the structure—
square within square,
offering order
where silence once grew.
I pressed meaning
into tight corners,
stacked my intentions
like totems
too still to be questioned.
But growth doesn’t ask
for permission.
It reaches.
It ruptures.
It remakes the shape
from within.
This is the moment
I stopped holding
what was never mine
to carry.

The Surrender work was born from my personal experience navigating resistance and chaos within a communal role—where overreach was met not with transformation, but with inertia. What began as a bid for meaningful change became a lesson in surrendering to self rather than to the expectations of others. Rather than retreat, I chose to resolve quietly.

The resulting compositions reflect an emotional architecture of transition: from opacity to transparency, order to rupture, and ultimately, silence to growth. These prints are not declarations but meditative moments—each one a square of breath held, and then released.

Three of these images were included in the THINK SQUARE INVITATIONAL Think Square 8, an annual event showcasing the work of 50+ local artists from the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.

1 A giclée print is a high-quality, archival art or photo reproduction made using a specialized inkjet printing process, resulting in exceptional detail, color accuracy, and longevity. These prints are produced with archival-quality, pigment-based inks and are printed on premium papers or canvas, making them ideal for fine art, limited editions, and professional photography.
